Why doesn't our Tory MP speak our against forced academisation of our schools?

April 24, 2016 4:24 PM

Kenilworth Focus 57 front pageLocal Liberal Democrat recently launched a petition via the Kenilworth Focus, calling on the Leader of Warwickshire County Council to write to the Prime Minister and the Warwickshire MPs, objecting to the proposed forced academisation of all state schools as being both undemocratic and wrong. Subsequently the Conservative Leader, with backing from all the other party leaders, has written to the Prime Minister to this effect.

However, the silence from our local Conservative MP on the subject is deafening!

Do you agree with the Tory Government's plan to force every state school in the country to become an academy in the next five years, whether they want to or not?

Here in Kenilworth & Southam we are blessed with a wonderful range of state schools, large and small. Where is the evidence that making them academies would make them better - or might it make them worse, and be an unnecessary distraction?

Liberal Democrats are not against academies as such. What we are against is central diktat from the Department of Education, over-riding the wishes of local residents. Worse than that, in fact - the Tories don't even intend to ask you if this is what you want, even though this policy of forced academisation was not in their 2015 manifesto.

Why is our MP silent on the matter? Does he intend to vote in favour when the new Education Bill is put to the House of Commons?
