'Just Vote' Campaign at University of Warwick8.54.52am GMT Sun 14th Mar 2010 Carl Andrew, a student at the University of Warwick, has launched an impressive personal initiative to persuade his fellow students of the importance of registering and using their votes in the forthcoming General Election. The campaign was launched at a hustings-style meeting at the University on Friday. Nigel Rock, the Liberal Democrats parliamentary candidate for the new constituency of Kenilworth & Southam attended, together with other Lib Dem and Conservative candidates for the three constituencies in which most Warwick students live - Kenilworth & Southam, Warwick & Leamington and Coventry South. No Labour or minor party candidates were present. Also speaking at the meeting was Ciaran Norris from the Power 2010 campaign, seeking support and candidates' signatures for the 'Power Pledge' - five top reforms to the current UK electoral and political system as selected by thousands of people voting in an on-line poll.
Nigel said after the meeting: "This is a great initiative that Carl has launched, and he has my total support. Young people need to vote in the General Election if they are to have their rightful influence on the future direction that their country will take. The Power Pledge, and in particular its top reform of introducing a proportional voting system in parliamentary elections, would help ensure that people can vote positively for the party whose ideals and policies they support, rather than the negative either/or choice that the current voting system so often provides."
