Local Liberal Democrats say that Labour's decision to scale back residential energy efficiency targets for 2010 should be reversed by the House of Commons.

They have written to local M.P. Andy King, who had previously supported Early Day Motions no.'s 96 and 1341 on this subject.

EDM 1341 (dated 14.06.04) stated:

"That this House is disappointed by the residential energy efficiency aim set by the Government to achieve 4.2 megatonnes of carbon (MtC) savings by 2010 rather than the 5 MtC savings by 2010 envisaged by the Energy White Paper, particularly as 338 honourable Members have supported the 5 MtC figure by signing EDM 96, and because the lower figure will make it more difficult to achieve fuel poverty targets and environmental targets for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions; and therefore calls upon the Government to implement urgently those measures already identified in the Energy Efficiency Implementation Plan and to consider introducing additional measures in this year's Comprehensive Spending Review."

Constituency Chair Ann Blacklock said:

"When this measure is returned to the House of Commons from the Lords, M.P.'s have another opportunity to do the right thing. I hope that Andy King will not support the Government on this, but will stick to his principles."
