Mary Harrison
Mary has been a resident of Kenilworth for many years. She is the widow of a local dental surgeon and has two daughters and three grandchildren. Her grandson has progressed well through local schools and plans to go to university in the autumn.
Mary was a teacher at Priors Field School for many years. On retiring she became a governor of two local schools, Thorns School and Burton Green School, including being Chair of governors for some years.
She served as a Park Hill town councillor for the Liberal Democrats for four years from 1995 to 1999.
As a member of the Kenilworth Community Care Council, she set up the Kenilworth Teapot thirteen years ago at the Youth and Community Centre in Bertie Road, and continues to run it on a weekly basis.
She is also a member of the management committee of the Youth & Community Centre.
Mary says:
"Whilst welcoming the long overdue regeneration of the town, for which I thank the leadership shown by my Liberal Democrat colleagues on the District Council, I believe that a strong Town Council can help to ensure the preservation of some of the character that has belonged for centuries to the small country town that was Kenilworth."
Richard Sweeney
Richard has lived in Kenilworth all his life, and his father Colin still lives in St. John's ward. Richard is married to Sarah, and they have a young pre-school daughter.
Having spent most of his working life in private industry locally, he now provides business support services to other businesses across the county.
Richard joined the Liberal Democrats four years ago, and campaigned unsuccessfully for election as a councillor in Park Hill ward last time round. He is a past treasurer of the local branch party., and was until recently Chair of Governors at Park Hill School.
Richard has always felt that Kenilworth was a safe and pleasant place to live, but for a long time the town has needed revitalising with improved shopping and better town centre facilities.
He says:
"In the last four years, since the Liberal Democrats have been jointly running the District Council, things have really started to happen for Kenilworth, and we are seeing the biggest investments in the town for a generation.
More need to be done, in particular to improve the local traffic infrastructure for the benefit of businesses and residents alike. I am a very strong supporter of a railway station for Kenilworth, and I want better bus links as well."
John Wilson
John has lived in Warwick District for nine years, firstly in the Milverton district of Leamington and then moving to Kenilworth some eighteen months ago. He has a partner Genny and a grown-up son.
He is a partner in a business which provides specialised employee communication services to large companies.
John joined the Liberal Democrats eight years ago because he was keen to make a contribution to the local community. He was active in Leamington's Milverton ward, focusing on traffic calming measures to address the real dangers posed by inappropriate speed, particularly to the young and elderly.
If elected, his focus in St John's will be to build a very strong sense of community spirit and pride in the area, with specialist interests in promoting leisure facilities, community transport and traffic calming.
Outside of work and political commitments, he took up golf last year and is taking part in this year's Two Castles' Run.
John says:
"I haven't been in Kenilworth long, but already I love the place. If elected I can make a positive contribution to people's lives in St. John's ward. I can bring fresh ideas and a business approach to the work of the local council."
