Against the background of difficult election results for the Liberal Democrats nationally last week, there were mixed fortunes for Lib Dem candidates in wards covered by the Kenilworth & Southam constituency.
In Kenilworth Abbey, Ann Blacklock held her District Council seat fairly comfortably, with strong performances from our other candidates Kate Dickson and Pat Ryan although falling short of the numbers of votes needed to win either of the other two seats from very well established Conservative councillors. Also in Abbey ward, both Kate and Pat were victorious in the Town Council elections, with Kate getting elected to the council for the first time.
Elsewhere in Warwick District, all Leamington Lib Dem seats were defended successfully, which means that the Lib Dems held all their nine district seats and are now the official opposition to the Conservatives on the council, with Labour having lost ground.
In Stratford district wards, Steve Kittendorf stormed to victory for the Lib Dems in Stockton & Napton, successfully defending the seat previously held by Nigel Rock with 68% of votes cast.
However, in Wellesbourne David Close lost his seat to the Conservatives after eight years on the district council and twenty as parish councillor. And in a district council by-election in Harbury caused by the resignation due to work commitments of the sitting Lib Dem councillor, Sue Roderick fell 45 votes short of holding the seat.
