Responding to news that the General Election has at last been called, Nigel Rock, the Liberal Democrat candidate for Kenilworth and Southam, said
"This promises to be one of the most uncertain elections for many years. The traditional national political balance may have changed because of the scandals of MPs' expenses and the financial crisis, but locally we have the added factor of an all new constituency. Voters in Kenilworth and Southam are in the third most changed seat in the UK and one of only 13 new constituencies in the country. Kenilworth and Southam may offer the Liberal Democrats the best chance of an election victory in Warwickshire based on local voting patterns.
"The Lib Dems have strengths across all three District Council Areas that go to make up the constituency, with good support throughout Kenilworth and the parts of the areas covered by Stratford and Rugby Districts that have come into the new constituency. Labour has had very low levels of support in the new constituency with not a single elected Councillor in the area. Whilst the Conservatives are seen to be the front runners, the Lib Dems are catching up fast judging from the reaction we are getting from local people.
"Vince Cable's honest and straightforward stance on the recent TV debate has won many people over, and in combination with Nigel Rock's reputation as an effective and hard working representative for his community the word is spreading. Many voters are saying that while they have tended to back the Conservatives in the past, or in a few cases Labour, this time Nigel Rock and the Lib Dems will be getting their support."
