Cllr John Whitehouse with Liz Lynne MEP at Kenilworth Fire Station in March 2009
Yesterday Warwickshire County Council warned motorists to expect heavy delays for two months due to the closure of a section of the A452 between Leamington and Kenilworth caused by the replacement of a gas main.
This highlights graphically the major issue of traffic congestion already raised by local Liberal Democrats in terms of the County Cabinet's proposal to close Kenilworth Fire Station. The plan is to provide all fire cover for the Kenilworth area from the fire station in Leamington town centre.
County councillor John Whitehouse (Liberal Democrat, Kenilworth Abbey), in whose ward the Kenilworth fire station is located, said:
"I've already established that the Fire Service cannot provide definitive answers to my questions of how differing traffic conditions would affect response times from Leamington. It seems that a major road closure like the one starting tomorrow is not factored into the plan.
"Local residents sitting in traffic jams to and from Leamington over the next two months will wonder how a Leamington fire engine could possibly get through to Kenilworth in time.
"It's essential that the issue of traffic congestion is given much higher priority in the Fire Service's plans than it appears to have at the moment."
