At the next General Election, the Liberal Democrats are firmly placed to challenge the Tories in the new constituency of Kenilworth & Southam. All elections in Kenilworth and Southam constituency since 2003 show the Lib Dems in firm overall second place behind the Conservatives. In every electoral division Liberal Democrats either took first or second place.
In May 2005, at the combined general election and county council election, the shares of the county council vote was as follows:
Liberal Democrats 32%
Conservatives 49%
Labour 15%
Others 4%
In June 2009 the county council election was combined with the Euro election. Turnout fell from the 71% recorded at 2005 general election. The Tories lost more votes (down by 6233 on last time) than the other parties, with the minor parties increasing their numbers of votes cast.
The Green party contested every seat in Warwickshire and just managed to take third place.
Labour are now fourth in Kenilworth and Southam!
Tactical voting is likely to decide the seat in the next general election, because of the complexities of the revised boundaries. If a lot of Labour voters decide to vote Liberal Democrat it could be a very close contest indeed.
