Tories Cut Library Books Again

Lib Dem county councillor John Whitehouse (Kenilworth Abbey) has condemned the Tories for another £150,000 cut in library book spending next year. This comes on top of a year in which:

  • Book spending reduced by £277,000 (37%),
  • 17,500 fewer books were bought,
  • Waiting lists for books doubled.

In another blow to library customers, use of the computers will be charged for the first time.

These changes form part of next year's County Council budget, pushed through by the controlling Tories last month.

John Whitehouse says: "The Lib Dems were the only group to vote consistently against these Tory cuts. Our own budget proposals aimed to cut bureaucracy and waste, not services to hard working families. Sadly neither Labour nor Conservatives were willing to support us."

The Tories have also cut:

  • £600,000 from grants to the voluntary sector and charities.
  • £200,000 from the County Music Service over three years.

Lib Dems say that the Tory budget cuts will hurt the very people who can least afford them.

BUT - GUESS WHAT THEY'RE SPENDING YOUR MONEY ON INSTEAD!

The Tories plan to spend over £1.5 million on county council offices in Warwick.

Yet many school buildings are in dire need of refurbishment and repair.

How's that for getting your priorities wrong!
