County Lib Dems Set Out Clear Budget Priorities

"Tough times call for tough measures and the Lib Dems have come in with the lowest council tax", says Jerry Roodhouse, Leader of the County Lib Dem Group. "Our message to the people of Warwickshire is clear:

  • Lower council tax
  • Cut bureaucracy
  • More help for you in the recession".

The Lib Dem priority is to cut costs and bureaucracy inside the County Council rather than cut services to hard-pressed residents.

It's interesting to see that both the Conservative and Labour Groups have adopted the Lib Dem's idea to reduce the County mileage rate and also freeze members' allowances - especially after they had previously rejected our proposal.

However, Lib Dems totally reject the Conservative proposals for cutting back on new library books and introducing charges for computer usage just when people looking for jobs need more help than ever.

Lib Dems:

  • Want to invest in parenting and family support services and reject any cuts to children's early intervention services. The recent Children Society Report has shown that the UK is the worst performer for children's well-being in the developed world. Lib Dems want to target this problem and improve the lives of Warwickshire children and their hard-working parents.
  • Think the Council has a vital role to helping residents through the recession. That's why Lib Dems want to invest more in creating a new skills unit so that people can get the help and training they need for a better future.
  • Are firmly against the proposed Conservative cuts to the voluntary sector. This sector performs a vital service for the whole of the community in Warwickshire. Its services have never been needed more by residents. This is the worst possible time to propose cuts to these services.

"Once again, the Lib Dem Group is showing how you can achieve clear priorities that address people's needs - even within the tightest of budgets". stated Jerry Roodhouse
