Cllr John Whitehouse by one of old street lights in Henry Street, Kenilworth
Ageing streetlights have been replaced with cutting edge technology in Henry Street, Kenilworth. Warwickshire County Council has just completed a scheme to replace the lighting columns in Henry Street using the latest lighting technology.
The scheme, costing £10,000, was promoted by County Councillor John Whitehouse (Liberal Democrat, Kenilworth Abbey), who secured funds for the work to be carried out from the county council's Warwick Area Committee.
The old poorly spaced street lights were around 40 years old and in need of replacement and rendered Henry Street as quite a dim place at night-time.
The new streetlights have lanterns fitted with a new light source called Cosmopolis, which is popular elsewhere in Europe, but is only just starting to be used in this country.
The benefits of using Cosmopolis as a light source are that it emits a high quality white light that renders colours better than traditional orange/yellow sodium light sources giving better night-time lighting as well as considerable energy savings.
The eight new street lights will save around £200 in electricity charges a year and reduce CO2 emissions by around 800kg a year compared to the electricity costs and emissions had sodium lighting been installed.
Unfortunately it is not possible to satisfactorily fit Cosmopolis lamps into existing lanterns and they can only be installed in places where a whole column replacement scheme has been designed for the light source.
Cllr Whitehouse said: "I'm delighted with these new streetlights, which look elegant and emit a good even spread of light while costing less to run.
"Henry Street residents have had to put up with very poor lighting for a long time, so it's great that their street was chosen for the first installation of these new technology lights in Warwickshire. I'm also grateful to Warwick Area Committee colleagues for backing my funding bid and allowing this scheme to go forward."
