Cllr Jerry Roodhouse
Conservative-run Warwickshire County Council needs to cut at least £15 million from its budget next year, and severe service cuts and job losses are likely.
Cllr Jerry Roodhouse (Lib Dem, Rugby Eastlands & Hillmorton), leader of the Lib Dem group on the county council, has attacked the Conservative Cabinet for ducking decisions to realign county finances in recent years, which now means that front-line services could now be cut.
He said: "Some of the proposed cuts are extremely worrying, particularly those affecting grants to the voluntary sector, social care and youth services. Cash could be saved by merging council departments, increasing efficiency and stopping any idea of revamping the council chambers."
The Conservative Cabinet published its budget proposals on Thursday 11th December. The Liberal Democrat group will be critically reviewing these budget proposals over the coming weeks, before the final budget is agreed by the full Council in February. Because Warwickshire is a "hung" council with no overall control, the final budget will need the agreement of at least two of the political groups on the council. The Liberal Democrats will not agree to proposals that do not accord our key objectives and core principles.
