Existing library building at Smalley Place
At the annual Kenilworth Town Assembly Meeting on Thursday evening, the Conservative leader of the Town Council, Councillor Norman Vincett, confirmed that current plans for a Public Service Centre at Smalley Place were financially unacceptable and unaffordable. He said that "other options" were being looked at, but could not give any timescales.
Councillor Ann Blacklock (Lib Dem, Kenilworth Abbey) welcomed a clear statement to the council rather than hearing such bad news via the press, and said that the ball was clearly in the court of the Conservative-controlled County Council and District Council to come up with a solution.
Liberal Democrats have already criticised the Conservatives for not being prepared to find any "new" money for this most important public project, despite having moaned for years that Kenilworth "did not get its fair share of council tax payments". They now control both the County and District Councils, yet the only funds they are willing to put towards the Public Service Centre are from the sale of assets in Kenilworth itself.
