The "We can cut crime" campaign launched today by Liberal Democrat leader Ming Campbell and Shadow Home Secretary Nick Clegg has been warmly welcomed by local councillors and party members.
County councillor and local vice-chairman John Whitehouse said:
"This campaign isn't about tough talk, it's about delivering practical, commonsense action to make our streets safer.
We need to take back our streets and town centres. We need more police on patrol, especially after dark. We need to free up police time from unnecessary paperwork. We shouldn't be spending billions of pounds on compulsory ID cards for innocent law abiding citizens, when that money could be better spent targeting criminals.
We need a prison system that works. Too often dangerous criminals are released early onto our streets to offend again. A life sentence should mean life. Prisoners should be made to work to pay compensation to their victims, and to cut re-offending.
The Liberal Democrats are serious about cutting crime, and the campaign launched today shows how it can be done."
