At a Warwickshire County Council meeting this week, Tory members voted down a Liberal Democrat motion which would have confirmed the Council's opposition to nuclear power and the storage of radioactive waste under the county. A large number of Labour members also voted against the motion.
Councillor John Whitehouse (Liberal Democrat, Kenilworth Abbey), who proposed the motion, said:
"I was disappointed but not surprised by the result.
David Cameron may be trying to claim 'green' credentials for the Tory party, but here in Warwickshire their local members are clearly not yet 'on message'!
Some of the Tories seem to think that nuclear power is the 'macho' choice, praising the French for not 'pussy footing around' in decision making about new nuclear power stations.
Warwickshire is in the front line in the government's bid to find a new site to dump radioactive waste underground. Warwickshire Tories want to keep all their options open. Will this tempt them to go for the government's 'carrot' of cash inducements for councils to put forward suitable sites?
Liberal Democrats do not believe a new generation of nuclear power stations is necessary or can be justified on safety or cost grounds. We want to see the effort and investment put into energy efficiency, renewables, decentralised power generation and clean sustainable technologies such as clean coal and carbon capture."
