John with Lib Dem supporters after his victory
Having got to bed at 6 a.m. on Friday morning after a long night at the general election count in Rugby, John Whitehouse joined other candidates at Leamington Town Hall for the count of the Warwickshire county council elections.
After a nail-biting process involving two partial recounts, John was declared winner of the Kenilworth Abbey seat by the closest of margins - 56 votes out of 4940 votes cast.
John said:
"This is a fantastic victory for the Lib Dems in Kenilworth. It's always difficult to follow a retiring councillor, and I pay tribute to Haydn Thomas for the work he has done for the local community over many years.
I look forward to starting work next week as the new county councillor for Kenilworth Abbey."
