Speaking at an all-party forum at St Peter's church, Dunchurch on Tuesday evening, Richard Allanach said that Liberal Democrat policies would help to make a period of imprisonment more effective in cutting crime.
There are two key areas where we could improve the way our prisons work.
First drug addiction - the majority of people who enter prison addicted to drugs leave prison with the same addiction, and drug rehabilitation is only offered to prisoners with a two year sentence or more. Clearly people leaving prison with a heroin or crack addiction are more likely to re-offend. We must offer drug rehabilitation to all prisoners who want it regardless of their length of sentence.
The second point concerns prison education for all prisoners. Statistics show that 80% of prisoners are functionally illiterate. Their chances of getting a regular job on release are very low. We must ensure that prisoners receive proper education to tackle these problems whilst they are in prison.
The meeting was also attended by the Conservative and UKIP candidates.
The Labour candidate did not attend.
