Lib Dems say: "Don't tinker with Council Tax, get rid of it!"

The national IsItFair Campaign, supported and endorsed by the Royal British Legion, has condemned the new Tory proposals to offer Council Tax discounts to pensioners as "electioneering for the 'grey' vote".

In a press release dated 21st February, the campaign group expressed their disappointment that Michael Howard continues to believe that "there's nothing wrong with Council Tax as a system", and that the Conservatives are continuing to ignore the plight of many non-pensioners.

John Whitehouse, Chairman of Kenilworth Liberal Democrats said:

"The IsItFair campaigners, who attracted massive support here in Kenilworth last year with their national petition, are absolutely right to distrust the Tories over Council Tax. What is on offer is just tinkering with an inherently unfair system of local taxation.

The Liberal Democrats are the only national party committed to the complete abolition of Council Tax, and its replacement by a fair system based on individuals' ability to pay, not on the value of the house they happen to live in."

The Liberal Democrats will be collecting signatures for their national "Axe The Tax petition in Kenilworth over this weekend.
