Voters in Rugby and Kenilworth looking for a fairer Britain, better public services, protection for our environment or a more peaceful world can only turn to the Liberal Democrats. That is the message that prospective parliamentary candidate Richard Allanach is sending to party workers following the launch of all three parties' pre-election campaigns.
"To win in Rugby & Kenilworth we need to be crystal clear with our message" he said.
"Only the Liberal Democrats are committed to making Britain a fairer place to live by axing the unfair Council Tax and tuition fees on young students. We will finance this by asking those earning over £100,000 to pay a little more in income tax." he explained.
"The savings we intend to make by doing without the final tranche of Eurofighters, the ruinously expensive ID card scheme and the Child Trust Fund will be spent on better schools, better hospitals and more police on our streets" he stated. "We will use the money we save to improve public services. We will not indulge in tax cutting gestures."
"Neither the Labour nor the Tory parties are serious about protecting our environment. In the next few weeks we can expect to see them complaining about plans to expand Coventry airport. But they both fail to understand that airports are the symptom not the disease. Only the Liberal Democrats are prepared to prescribe the remedy of reducing the growth in air travel by taxing aviation fuel" he continued.
"The decision to join in President Bush's war on Iraq was the most crucial decision taken by Parliament since the decision to join the European Union" he concluded. "The votes of the Labour and Tory parties have cost tens of thousands of lives. We Liberal Democrats can be proud that we saw through the deception around weapons of mass destruction and voted for peace."
" In 2004 we gained extra councillors, extra MEPs and did well in parliamentary by-elections including our spectacular victory in Leicester South. In Rugby and Kenilworth we polled strongly in the local elections and took the Park Hill seat from the Tories pushing Labour into fourth place. This year we can add parliamentary representation to our already significant presence on the local councils."
