Students at Rugby's Lawrence Sheriff School have been urged to use the web to find out more about the political options open to them.
Richard Allanach
Speaking at an Upper School Assembly last Friday, Richard Allanach the Liberal Democrats' parliamentary spokesman for Rugby & Kenilworth said that the opinions of all the major parties could be readily found on the web, and that students could also use the web to find out more about some of the key issues of the day such as global warming.
He urged pupils to use the web to find out about the six principles for deciding whether a war was just, and to use those principles to test the judgement of George Bush and Tony Blair.
"One of the six key principles of waging a just war is that there must be no alternative, and in the case of the war on Iraq there was the alternative of allowing the United Nations Weapons inspectors to continue with their work. The decision to bomb and invade Iraq was the worst decision that British politicians have taken in your lifetime" he told the students.
His short speech provoked a lot of questions from students at the School.
Richard Allanach thanked Peter Kent, the head teacher, for allowing him to address the assembly. Lawrence Sheriff expects to host the Conservative and Labour candidates later in the school year.
