Liberal Democrats Demand Action Over Accident Blackspot

September 24, 2004 4:53 PM

The Liberal Democrats team in Abbey ward, Kenilworth are demanding action be taken quickly to improve safety at a notorious local accident blackspot.

Last week saw three minor accidents in one afternoon at the corner of Castle Road and Castle Grove, in front of Kenilworth Castle, followed by a head-on collision between two cars further down Castle Road last Thursday night, in which a local man sustained a broken leg and other injuries.

Councillor Ann Blacklock (Liberal Democrat, Abbey) has met with local residents, who are calling for urgent steps to avoid the risk of future fatalities. She said:

"Residents' fears are fully justified. This is a difficult corner for vehicles to negotiate at speed, and they often end up in the middle of the road despite the white painted chevrons. Some more positive safety measures are required."

Local campaigner John Whitehouse, Abbey Focus Team, said:

"There is a clear case for action here, but this is not an isolated example. Kenilworth has very few of the road safety measures seen in many towns of comparable size - for example safety cameras, speed indicators, 20 m.p.h. zones near schools, raised pedestrian crossings, road chicanes and cycle lanes.

This is despite the fact that we have a main A road going right through the town, and several of our side roads are well-known "rat runs" for speeding traffic.

As a community we need to take road safety much more seriously, and make our town a better place for everyone, pedestrians, cyclists - and, yes, motorists as well."
