Councillor Jess Upstone & Richard Allanach outside empty BT-owned house
Rugby Liberal Democrats fear that British Telecom are building a huge land bank to take forward their scheme to turn the Rugby radio masts site into a huge housing and warehousing complex.
In addition to the radio masts site itself British Telecom appear to be purchasing land and houses around the site to form an even bigger development package.
Liberal Democrat activists Richard Allanach and Councillor Jess Upstone recently visited one house which had been bought by British Telecom and then left to go to rot. Councillor Jess Upstone said "There are over one thousand families on the waiting list in Rugby, and British Telecom should rent out any houses they have bought until the future of the radio masts site is settled."
Richard Allanach said "I am worried that British Telecom might be trying to stifle debate about this important site. They are not prepared to come to public meetings on the future of the site and they seem to be buying out all the neighbours who might object."
A recent analysis by Rugby Borough Council showed that there was no need to develop the site to meet the borough's immediate housing needs as there was plenty of "brownfield" land in Rugby itself which should be developed before consideration was given to taking more agricultural land.
