Dominic Coker, one of the Conservative town councillors for Kenilworth Park Hill ward, has suddenly resigned from the council on the grounds of ill-health. The Tories have suggested that Daphne Harrison be co-opted to replace him, which we will not accept! If the Tories do not accept our suggestion that a Lib Dem be co-opted instead, then a by-election is inevitable. Of course, the Labour Party, an Independent, or any group of 10 Park Hill residents may call for a by-election anyway.
The Tories seem to have timed the resignation for maximum inconvenience to everyone else, including the electorate! Dominic Coker has been unwell for a long time, and has played no real part in any town council proceedings since being elected in May 2003. The honourable thing to have done would have been to enable a by-election to take place on 10th June, simultaneously with the Euro election-as happened in Warwick.
As it is, Park Hill voters face the prospect of a by-election during the school summer holidays. Any by-election has to be requested by 6th July, and must then be held within 60 days. This makes the last possible date Thursday 2nd September.
